I think some people might be somewhat misled by list building and how to implement it within their marketing efforts. Everyone that I’ve spoken to has told me to just start one regardless of how many people are on your list (great advice btw). You don’t learn without trying and you ought as well start somewhere and it’s not like people know how many thousands of people are on your list (and NO you dont need a list of that many people necessarily). Your list shares many similarities with your regular marketing efforts: quality is still important, it needs to be tested and tweaked.
You should also test your opt-in to make sure that it is in working order. Nothing will turn off visitors to a website then broken links or forms that lead to a page 404 (I really hate that page lol). You should also see which type of optin works best for your site, a pop-up, pop-under, a static optin form on every page, do you have a static landing page that you send people to with an offer. You should also use several lists for different products or newletters so that way you can cater to the different needs of your visitors this is an effective way to market your list.

Do you know a site that offers a free Good looking opt in.? Aweber is a good source for an Opt In but i think its not free.
